General Note for Delegates: Chandigarh is exceptionally pedestrian-friendly compared to other major Indian metros. English is widely spoken by hotel staff, tour guides, and app-based cab drivers (Uber and Ola operate extensively here). For safety, comfort, and ease of access, the months between October and March offer the most pleasant weather for outdoor sightseeing.
1. The Rock Garden of Chandigarh
A breathtaking, 40-acre open-air exhibition entirely constructed from industrial and domestic waste. Created secretly by self-taught artist Nek Chand in 1957, it features thousands of unique sculptures made of broken bangles, ceramic tiles, and discarded materials arranged amidst interconnected courtyards and artificial waterfalls. It stands as a globally unique testament to raw, visionary recycling on a grand scale.
2. Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
The architectural heart of Chandigarh, this grand government complex includes the Secretariat, the High Court, and the Palace of Assembly. Framed against the Shivalik hills, it is an international pilgrimage site for students of architecture and design, featuring Corbusier's iconic Open Hand Monument - a symbol of peace and reconciliation ("open to receive, open to give").
3. Sukhna Lake
A pristine, 3-square-kilometer man-made reservoir located at the foothills of the Himalayas. It serves as a tranquil sanctuary where locals gather for morning walks, rowing, and catching the sunset. The promenade is entirely pedestrianized, well-lit, and completely free of vehicular traffic.
4. Zakir Hussain Rose Garden
Spanning 30 acres, this is Asia's largest botanical rose garden. It features over 1,600 distinct varieties of roses alongside unique medicinal trees. The garden is meticulously landscaped with wide walking paths, expansive lawns, and clear English signage detailing the plant varieties.
5. Government Museum and Art Gallery (Sector 10)
Designed by Le Corbusier himself, this museum houses an extraordinary collection of ancient Gandharan stone sculptures (blending Greek and Indian artistic styles), Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings, and historical artifacts. The surrounding campus also features the Natural History Museum and a fine collection of contemporary Indian art. One of the most prominent museums of India that speaks about Indian history and partition. Established in 1947, with unique architecture. It was set up to encourage appreciation of values embedded in art and bring it close to the lives of people through interpretation of its rich collection and innovative programmes.
